A Journey Through Time
Historic Route 66, often referred to as the Main Street of America, has been a symbol of freedom and adventure for over a modern century.
From its beginnings in the bustling streets of Chicago to the sunny shores of Santa Monica, this legendary highway has captured the hearts of travelers far and wide.
As we celebrate its Centennial, we invite you to relive the magic of the open road and the nostalgia of a bygone era.

THEN...
Calvin Coolidge was our President -- Our 30th! Prohibition had been hanging around since 1920, so long, it was both very unpopular and widely disregarded.
Moonshine and Speakeasies supplied Americans with their favorite forms of alcohol: Hooch, Jungle Juice. Brewsky. Bathtub Gin and White-lightning.
Duke Ellington and Bessie Smith could be heard blaring on home Victrolas coast to coast. Young women wore "flapper dresses" and bobbed their hair. Urban gentlemen dressed in pinstripes with wide lapels.
The American automotive industry was absolutely booming. Petroleum ruled. Standard Oil, Gulf, and Texaco. Black Gold. Guey-slick: It provided asphalt for the highways and gasoline and lubricant for the engines.
The Twenties roared forward in Fords and Chevrolets at a breakneck 25 - 50 MPH!
Networks of modern highways, freeways and bridges spanned the country, border to border and coast to coast.
Route 66, one of the most ambitious feats of transport engineering, was one of the original two-lane modern highways in the U.S. Highway system.
Nicknamed the "Main Street of America," Route 66 played a vital role in connecting American culture, economy, and assisting mass-migration, especially during the Great Depression of the 1930s (The Grapes of Wrath 1939).
After World War II, Historic Route 66 symbolized freedom of travel, becoming with the OHV V8, the spirit of motorized adventure. (Route 66 was a large part of the inspiration for The Beat Generation: On the Road 1957.)
